Austin Sheldon, Hermit of Pike County PA

1877 found dead on a Friday last. Tries to get married again in 1880. Gone missing in 1884. Hermits are SUPPOSED to be missing. That’s what they do. 1886 found dead AGAIN on Monday last.

I fortuitously stumbled on these articles while researching Pike County PA. It appears to be the same man who has achieved legendary hermit status and a lot of media attention. The dates are wacky. Just found a third article which gets even more strange.

Obviously Austin Sheldon was good press. They couldn’t just let him DIE.
